• Sclerotherapy is a quick, safe and effective treatment to safely eliminate varicose, reticular and spider veins.
  • Results are instant with no downtime.
  • You can return to your normal daily activities immediately.

In sclerotherapy, a fine needle is used to inject a solution into the vein, which causes an irritation in the inner lining of the varicose vein causing them to seal instantly.  The residual varicose veins are reabsorbed by the body within the course of few weeks.  When necessary, graduated compression stockings will be prescribed.

Sclerotherapy usually requires 3 or 4 sessions depending on the areas needing treatment.

Sclerotherapy is a relatively simple non-surgical treatment which only takes 30-40 minutes. At Cerulean Medical Institute, a Kelowna vein and laser clinic, our highly trained cosmetic specialists will help you bring back the healthy legs you once had.

Sclerotherapy FAQs

How does Sclerotherapy work?

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a solution (a detergent or a salt solution) directly into the vein.  The solution causes disruption to the lining of the vein which ultimately results in disappearance of the vein.

How will I feel during the treatment?

Mild discomfort during injection of the unwanted varicose, reticular and spider veins. The treatment takes about 30 minutes and you do not need to take analgesia prior to it.

What results can I expect?

Instant elimination of varicose, reticular blue veins and spider leg veins. Bigger veins will be reabsorbed fading gradually over the course of a few weeks following the procedure.

How many treatments will I need?

To achieve optimal result, you will require 3-4 treatment sessions, spaced 1-2 weeks apart. This depends on individual variations.

How do I prepare prior to my treatment?

Avoid unnecessary blood thinners or anti-coagulants, anti-inflammatories and  aspiring at least 48 hours prior to your treatment.

Do shave the legs or waxing one or two days prior to treatment.

When treating varicose and reticular blue veins, graduated compression tights are prescribed prior to your treatment and they will be applied immediately after your sclerotherapy session.

What happens after my treatment?

Immediately after your sclerotherapy treatment, you are advised to go for a 30 minutes brisk walk. We like to recommend you to stay active everyday for at least a week after your peel to speed up recovery. Please avoid strenuous exercise immediately after and whilst healing takes place.

When applicable, you are required to wear  graduated compression stockings for at least 1 week post procedure with regular walking and leg elevation recommended. The graduated compression stockings will be left on for the first 24 hours post sclerotherapy. After the first 24 hours, it is strongly recommended to wear them during the day and remove them at night until the varicose veins fade away.

Before you get up in the morning, have your compression tights nearby and apply them on. If you have been standing up for a while without your compression tights, please lie in bed with your legs elevated for at least 5 minutes before you apply your compression tights.

Avoid sun exposure throughout the course of treatment and use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sun block SPF 30 or greater when treatment area is exposed to the sun.

It is recommended that you avoid hot baths at least 4 weeks after your sclerotherapy injections.

If you spend prolonged hours standing up or sitting down, it is advisable to use regularly your graduated compression stocking to prevent future appearance of new varicose veins.
