How does laser hair removal work?
Hair removal with our medical grade lasers work by selectively targeting the pigment within your hair follicle. The customized laser heat energy destroys the specific hair follicle permanently. Laser hair removal areas includes bikini hair removal, legs, armpits, face, back, chest, even nose and ear hair removal.
At Cerulean Medical Institute, we use our gold-standard laser for hair removal in clients with lighter skin. This laser selectively targets and destroys the pigment in the hair shaft and the bulb of the hair follicles.
We use the Nd:YAG laser which is the safest and the most efficient laser for targeting the melanin in individuals with darker skin.
What does laser hair removal feel like?
Patients may feel some very mild discomfort during their laser hair removal treatment. The laser sensation is often likened to flicking an elastic band against the skin. The majority of patients report the laser hair treatment to be much more comfortable than they had expected, and those who have waxed previously often say the laser hair procedure is much more tolerable. However, we still recommend applying a numbing cream, like Emla, before your laser hair treatment.
What results can I expect from laser hair removal?
While some patients inform us they see a noticeable difference after their first laser hair treatment, you can expectย more noticeable results around your third treatment. Some hair is thicker and has deeper roots, which will take longer for noticeable results. ย This is perfectly normal.
Permanent hair removal with our medical grade lasers are much more effective than laser hair removal at home. Over a series of six to eight laser hair treatment sessions you should notice less hairs and silkier skin.
How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?
For the best results, we recommend a course of six to eight laser hair removal treatments with a treatment interval of four to six weeks between each appointment, depending on the area of the body being treated. This is because the hair growth cycle occurs in three stages: growing, resting and transitional, and hair can only be targeted by the laser if it is in the growing stage.ย Therefore not all hairs can be targeted in a single treatment.
At your laser hair removal consultation, your laser specialist will advise you as to the best course for you to achieve optimum results.
How do I prepare for my laser hair removal treatment?
You may continue to shave or use depilatory creams if you wish to keep the treated area hair-free. It is however not advisable to pluck or wax the area between treatments. ย This disturbs the hair growth cycle, which can make subsequent laser hair treatments less effective.
When returning for follow-up laser hair treatments, please ensure that one to two millimetresย of hair are visible on the surface of your skin. You must also ensure that the area to be treated is not tanned, as explained below.
We request that you shave the treatment area the day before your appointment. ย This isย to ensure your skin is less sensitive and treatment results are improved.
What happens in between and after laser hair removal treatments?
There is very little if any recovery or downtime time. You may have some redness following a treatment, which can last between one and eight hours.ย To help cool the skin, some patients require ice packs, and we also recommend applying a soothing aloe vera lotion or aftersun to the skin following a treatment session.
For twenty four hours after your treatment, you should avoid heat treatments, saunas and direct sun exposure. ย We recommend using sunblock on exposed areas. You should allow around fourteen to twenty one days for the hairs to fall out following your treatments. ย You can aid this process by exfoliating.
In between laser hair treatments, you are free to shave the area. In fact, we request you shave the treatmentย area the day before your appointment. We advise against waxing, as this can disrupt the hair growth cycle and make subsequent treatments less effective.
Gradually you will notice the hair start to shed in the treated area.ย It will continue to grow as you progress through your course of treatment. ย Noticeably reducing with the more laser hair treatments you have.
A very small number of people may experience side effects such as pink skin, redness or swelling around the treatment area.
Can I have laser hair removal with my sun tan?
While we do treat darker skin types, we prefer not to treat sun-tanned skins, including fake tans. This is because naturally darker skin has a different distribution of the melanin granules which is why they tolerate treatment more easily than an equally dark tanned skin.
Before your treatment, our cosmetic specialists will check your skin to ensure they can treat you. We take the safety of our patients very seriously, so please donโt be upset if you are rejected because your melanin count is too high for a treatment. ย Please understand that this is to ensure that there are no adverse effects by the laser on your skin.
Will laser hair removal help with my ingrown hairs?
Most definitely. ย Often our patients will report that most of their ingrown hairs are gone after their early treatments, though we recommend a full course of treatments to ensure they are completely gone.
