Botox vs. Fillers at Cerulean Medical Institute in Kelowna BCNon-surgical Injectable treatments like Botox and dermal fillers are increasing in popularity, as more and more people seek out non-surgical treatment to improve the way they look and feel. With ongoing research and use of evidence-based medicine, Dr. Chetty develops techniques that yield more natural and beautiful results to suit each patient’s individual needs. If you are interested in trying injections for the first time, it can sometimes be difficult to determine which treatment might be best for you. Many patients have questions about Botox and dermal fillers and which type of treatment would best soften their wrinkles and create a more youthful look. Below are important facts that you need to know when it comes to comparing these two treatment options.

When to Choose Botox

Botox in Kelowna along with other neuromodulator anti-wrinkle injectable options, is intended to soften dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that form due to repetitive facial movements. These wrinkles worsen over time and are especially noticeable when you make more extreme expressions such as scowling, frowning, or laughing. Dynamic wrinkles are most commonly seen in the forehead and eye areas of the face. Some examples include crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, frown or 11 lines between the eyebrows, and horizontal forehead lines that form when you raise your eyebrows.

Botox works by temporarily relaxing the muscles where it is injected. The active ingredient in Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin, which relaxes muscles. Your wrinkles will be softer and less noticeable whilst still being able to express yourself. Botox relaxes brow depressor muscles like the frown and crow feet areas thus creating a more youthful less tired looking brow lift.

When to Choose Dermal Fillers

As you age, facial volume naturally decreases. This is the result of a decreased volume of bone, fat and soft tissue compartments. Along with slowed collagen and elastin production and accumulative breakdown, results in decreased firmness and elasticity in the skin. Volume loss results in wrinkles, folds, sagginess and a hollow or sunken appearance as you age. Dermal filler injections are intended to reduce these signs of aging by restoring the lost volume. Through these injections, facial volume is replenished helping to contour, lift and soften wrinkles and folds. Some examples of common dermal filler uses include marionette lines, nasolabial folds, sunken or hollow cheeks and under eyes, perioral lines and lip enhancement.

Which Fillers Should I Choose?

At Cerulean Medical Institute, we offer the latest in dermal filler products, including options such as Juvéderm, Radiesse, Belotero, and Teosyal. The majority of dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid to restore volume and add a firmer, more hydrated look to the skin. Other products, such as Radiesse, stimulate your natural collagen production. This leads to a longer-lasting results, however, the use may not be suitable for all areas of the face. Finally, most dermal fillers include varying formulas with differing consistencies suited to different areas of the face or severity of the volume loss they are intended to treat. During a consultation, Dr. Chetty will explain which product is best suited to the area you wish to treat as well as the results you may expect.

How Long Will Botox Results Last?

Botox is not permanent. For most patients, Botox lasts three to four months. Over time, many patients find that their Botox results look better every time they receive additional maintenance injections. During your initial consultation, you can establish a long-term treatment plan which includes routine maintenance injections.

How Long Will Filler Results Last?

Dermal fillers will eventually be naturally broken down and metabolized by the body, meaning their results are not permanent. At Cerulean Medical Institute, we use long lasting dermal fillers. Dermal fillers can be topped up every one to two years. The longevity of your results will vary based on the product we choose and the area where it is injected. Areas that see more frequent movement, such as near the mouth and eyes, will typically not last as long. During your dermal filler consultation, Dr. Chetty will explain reasonable expectations and help you develop a long-term treatment plan to keep up your results.

Can I Combine Botox and Fillers?

It is very common for patients to receive both Botox and dermal fillers. This allows you to address different signs of aging throughout the face for more complete and holistic rejuvenation and better aesthetic results. You can receive Botox injections for dynamic wrinkles in the upper third of the face while also receiving fillers to address volume loss in the temple, cheek, jawline and mouth areas. This combination is often referred to as a liquid facelift, offering results that are comparable to a surgical procedure without requiring incisions, risks, or downtime after a surgery.

What to Expect After Botox or Filler Injections?

The recovery process after receiving Botox and filler injections is overall very comparable. No downtime is required, but you may notice some common mild side effects. The healthier the patient, the quicker the healing and less the risk for side effects and downtime.  Side effects include mild swelling, redness, and slight sensitivity at the injection site. Dr. Chetty will advise you to avoid strenuous activity, direct sun exposure, applying pressure to the injection site, or drinking alcohol for about 24 hours after your injections. This prevents unnecessary side effects like bruising after your injections.

After dermal filler injections, you will notice your early results immediately, and two to four weeks for your final results to be noticeable.

Botox injections, however, do not yield immediate results. Most patients will notice their Botox results about 1-2 weeks after receiving their injections.
