Botox and dermal fillers are a quick and effective way to contour, lift folds and smooth out wrinkles to give you a more youthful appearance. To get the best natural looking and long-lasting results from your Botox or Filler treatments, doing the aftercare right helps.

After your treatment at Cerulean Medical Institute, our skin care experts provide you with detailed instructions how to take care of your skin and treatment area to reduce side effects and to make the most of your treatment. Here are important guidelines of what to avoid following an injectable treatment.

Don’t Expose Your Skin to Excess Sunlight or Tanning

You should regularly apply sunscreen and take special care to avoid excessive UV exposure to reduce the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage.

Don’t Consume Alcohol

Alcohol should be avoided for 2-3 days after your treatment. Alcohol causes a pro-inflammatory state and slows down healing. This increases the risk of swelling and bruising.

Don’t Do Strenuous Activities

You’re allowed to go about your day as normal, returning to work or whatever activities you have after an appointment, but do not exercise for at least 24 hours. Strenuous activities increase blood flow, risks swelling and can affect the way the injectable interacts with your body’s tissues. This can disrupt the healing process or cause the treatment to be metabolized too quickly, both of which would alter the results.

This is especially true of Botox injections, as the neuromodulator that reduce the appearance of wrinkles could potentially migrate to areas you don’t want them in the skin. It also increases the risk of swelling and bruising, as blood pressure rises during exercise, which increases the chance of blood leaking into an injection area and forming a bruise.

Don’t Use Hot Tubs, Saunas or Hot Showers

Excessive amount of heat exposure increases the risk of swelling and alters the skin barrier. For best results, you should avoid hot tubs, saunas, hot showers or hot baths for at least 24 hours after your treatment.

Don’t Have Other Skincare Treatments Too Soon

It is best to avoid aggressive exfoliation, microneedling and use of topical retinoids and Vitamin C for one week after your injectable treatment. Always let Dr. Chetty know which procedures you’ve had in the past and plan for the future, so he can recommend the safest and most effective aftercare.

Don’t Go to The Dentist

As you sit on the dentist chair with your mouth wide open, your skin and muscles stretch and press on the fillers and formula that hasn’t assimilated into place yet. Avoid this risk of infection or displacement, by scheduling your dental appointment at least a month out from your filler appointment.

Don’t Wear Glasses After A Liquid Nose Job

For those undergoing a non-surgical nose job (also called a liquid nose job), wearing glasses or goggles for extended periods of time can put undue pressure on the nose, causing indentations or displacement that will affect your results. This includes eyewear like prescription lenses, VR headsets, and swim or ski goggles. It’s best to consider switching to contact lenses during this time.

Don’t Get a Massage

It bears mentioning that facial massages should be deferred for at least a month after your injectable treatment, but so are body massages in almost every case. This is because most massage tables and chairs place your face in a donut-shaped cushion that greatly increases the pressure and swelling in your face. For dermal fillers, a massage can displace the fillers from the intended area in the skin to the point where it causes persistent, unwanted swelling. The best case scenario, a massage will likely delay your recovery time, meaning a longer wait for your final results.

Don’t Neglect Your Treatment Area

Once you leave our office, you’re free to go about the rest of your day as normal. It is important to apply moisturizer and sunscreen regularly. This encourages a healthy, moisturized skin to keep your complexion looking and feeling great. Just don’t press or rub too aggressively when using facial cleanser or products for the first few days after your injectable treatments, as pressing on the filler or formula can affect its appearance. This includes avoiding dermal rollers for a few weeks.
