Permanent Hair Removal FAQS

Is laser hair removal right for me?

If you are tired of shaving, waxing unwanted hair and using over-the-counter treatments with minimal effect, then come visit us at Cerulean Medical Institute for safe, comfortable, permanent reduction of unwanted hair by our expert laser specialists in Kelowna.

How does laser hair removal work?

At Cerulean Medical Institute, we use the gold-standard Alexandrite laser for hair removal in clients with lighter skin. This laser selectively targets and destroys the pigment in the hair shaft and the bulb of the hair follicles.

We use the Nd:YAG laser which is the safest and the most efficient laser for targeting the melanin in individuals with darker skin.

What does laser hair removal feel like?

We advise patients that they may feel some discomfort during their treatment. The sensation is often likened to flicking an elastic band against the skin. However, many patients report the treatment to be much more comfortable than they had expected, and those who have waxed previously often say the procedure is more tolerable. However, we still recommend applying a numbing cream, like Emla, before laser hair removal treatment.

What results can I expect?

While some patients inform us they see a noticeable difference after their first treatment, you can expect more noticeable results around your third treatment. Some hair is thicker and has deeper roots, which will take longer for noticeable results; this is perfectly normal.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

For the best results, we recommend a course of four to six laser hair removal treatments with a treatment interval of four to six weeks between each appointment, depending on the area of the body being treated. This is because the hair growth cycle occurs in three stages: growing, resting and transitional, and a hair can only be targeted by the laser if it is in the growing stage – so not all hairs can be targeted in a single treatment.

At your consultation, your laser specialist will advise you as to the best course for you to achieve optimum results.

How do I prepare for my laser hair removal treatment?

You may continue to shave or use depilatory creams if you wish to keep the treated area hair-free. However, it is not advisable to pluck or wax the area between treatments as this disturbs the hair growth cycle, which can make subsequent treatments less effective.

When returning for follow-up treatments, please ensure that one to two millimetres of hair are visible on the surface of your skin. You must also ensure that the area to be treated is not tanned, as explained below.

We request that you shave the treatment area the day before your appointment; this is to ensure your skin is not too sensitive to treat.

What happens in between and after laser hair removal treatments?

There is very little if any recovery time. You may have some redness following a treatment, which can last between one and eight hours. To help cool the skin, some patients require ice packs, and we also recommend applying a soothing aloe vera lotion or aftersun to the skin following a treatment session.

For 24 hours after your treatment, you should avoid heat treatments, saunas and direct sun exposure; we recommend using sunblock on exposed areas. You should allow around 14 to 20 days for the hairs to fall out following your treatments; you can aid this process by exfoliating.

In between laser hair removal treatments, you are free to shave the area. In fact, we request you shave the treatment area the day before your appointment. We advise against waxing, as this can disrupt the hair growth cycle and make subsequent treatments less effective.

Gradually you will notice the hair start to shed in the treated area; it will continue to grow as you progress through your course of treatment, noticeably reducing with the more treatments you have.

A small number of people may experience side effects such as pink skin, redness or swelling around the treatment area.

Can I have laser hair removal with my sun tan?

While we do treat darker skin types, we prefer not to treat sun-tanned skins, including fake tans. This is because naturally darker skin has a different distribution of the melanin granules which is why they tolerate treatment more easily than an equally dark tanned skin.

Before your treatment, our cosmetic specialists will check your skin with a melanin counter to ensure they can treat you. We take the safety of our patients very seriously, so please don’t be upset if you are rejected because your melanin count is too high for a treatment; understand that this is to ensure you are not hurt by the laser.

Will laser hair removal help with my ingrown hairs?

Absolutely, often our patients will report that most of their ingrown hairs are gone after their first treatment, though we recommend a full course of treatments to ensure they are completely gone.

What is the cost of Laser Hair Removal in Kelowna?

Kelowna Laser hair removal prices can vary based on a number of factors, including the location and the texture of the hair that is to be removed. Of course, the cost of laser hair removal in Kelowna is a question that is reasonable to ask, but it requires a consultation with one of our laser specialists to answer. Rest assured, after your initial consultation you will have a good idea of how many treatments will be required, and therefore how much your permanent hair removal costs will be.
